Starting in 2025, Illinois will implement a new net metering law that will change how solar energy users are compensated. Under this new regulation, homeowners will only receive net metering credits on the supply portion of their utility bill, meaning the delivery charges will no longer be offset by solar production. While solar power will cover your energy usage during the day, any consumption during non-solar hours (such as at night) will pull from the grid unless you install a battery storage system.
A battery allows you to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use at night, ensuring you are not reliant on the grid. Additionally, a battery offers a significant benefit during a localized power outage, enabling you to go 100% off-grid and maintain power to your home.
To encourage homeowners to go solar despite these net metering changes, the state of Illinois has introduced two new incentives. These incentives are designed to provide better compensation for solar installations, making solar energy a more attractive investment even without the previous full net metering benefits.
